
Field Test Engineering Intern

The Position
We are currently hiring a Field Test Engineering Intern for a summer term position, from June 2026 to August 2026 (3 months) at our Hitachi Rail SRS office in New York.
The intern will support integration and testing activities, including field work for ongoing project tasks. They will perform field change modifications to existing designs as needed, and provide troubleshooting and maintenance support for Communication‑Based Train Control (CBTC) equipment—such as vehicle and wayside systems. The role also includes assisting with test documentation and the preparation of formal reports.
Responsibilities

Support on-site installation and maintenance of Non-CBTC and CBTC equipment for wayside systems under the supervision of an experienced field tester.

Support work process procedures as per customer requirements.

Identify problems detected during tests and correct them as needed.

Provide support in troubleshooting and repairing CBTC equipment as required.

Provide support for test carborne and wayside activities, including the planning of field activities.

Provide technical support for all operational matters related to the functionality of wayside subsystems.

Collaborate with diverse departments and become involved in all phases of integration, commissioning, and support.

Promote customer relations and company credibility.

Investigate and troubleshoot system anomalies through analysis of data files, design documentation, and interaction with development departments.

Summarize and detail test activities in both informal and formal test reports.
Requirements

The successful candidate should be working towards a bachelor’s or master’s degree from an accredited university or college in Electrical, Mechanical, Computer Science, or a related field.

Demonstrates and applies a broad knowledge of field of specialization through successful completion of moderately complex assignments with a scholastic context

Excellent organizational and communications skills, both verbal and written, and good interpersonal skills

Demonstrated fluency and understanding/comprehension in oral and written English

Experience with breaking down complex topics into simple formats preferred

Ability to understand and take meaning from trends of data.

Critical thinking, able to identify and implement better efficiencies and process improvements

Effective communication skills to interact professionally with all levels inside and outside the organization.

Flexibility to take on additional projects and adapt to changes in priorities

The ability to work 40 hours a week in a hybrid environment for the duration of the internship is essential. The job location (office or field) may vary week to week depending on project needs.
Nice To Haves

Field experience in a rail transit installation, testing, or support environment, or in a similar technology application, is highly desirable.
