The Position

The Intern, Finance (Controllership) will provide support in the day-to-day accounting operations, month-end close process, and financial reporting for Seaspan Shipyards and Seaspan ULC. This role will collaborate with a variety of teams across Seaspan Shipyards. The ability to clearly communicate, attention to detail, excellent people skills, flexibility, and adaptability in a demanding environment with competing priorities are essential for this role. This role is ideal for students looking to apply their academic knowledge to real-world challenges in a dynamic environment. This role reports to the Manager, VSY Accounting.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare journal entries to support the month-end close process.
  • Assist in the preparation of monthly and quarterly management reports.
  • Monthly reconciliation of various balance sheet accounts and maintenance of working papers.
  • Under the guidance of the Manager, VSY Accounting, help to develop and/or maintain detailed process and procedure documentation where necessary.
  • Perform additional ad-hoc analysis and other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Enrollment in a Finance or Accounting degree program is required.
  • Strong understanding of all three financial statements: Income Statement, Balance Sheet, and Cash Flow.
  • High level of proficiency in Excel (lookups, pivot tables, index match).
  • Experience using an ERP is considered an asset.
  • Strong attention to detail, critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication with ability to communicate with others with tact and diplomacy.
  • Enjoy a hands-on role and dig into the details.
  • Proactive and self-motivated to learn new concepts and participate in new projects.
