Community Relations Intern- 2026

The Position
This internship is designed to be both educational and practical. In this position, the intern will learn how to take skills he/she may have acquired in school related to his or her particular areas of interest and apply them in a professional setting. He/she will gain a better understanding of their roles in a global business setting and be better prepared to work in the future.
Responsibilities
- Support Port Houston’s community relations and workforce development efforts by assisting with planning, coordinating, and staffing community meetings, public events, tours, and outreach programs
- Help track, document, and organize community feedback, inquiries, and engagement activities to support transparency and reporting efforts.
- Assist with developing, reviewing, and editing outreach materials, presentations, and digital content to support Port Houston’s community and workforce development initiatives.
- Conduct research on community stakeholders, neighborhood associations, schools, non-profits, and civic organizations within the Port Houston service area.
- Provide administrative and logistical support for community sponsorships, partnerships, and special events.
- Participate in community meetings, port tours, and outreach events, including taking notes and assisting with follow-up actions.
- Collaborate with internal departments such as Environmental Affairs, Government Relations, Operations, and Communications to support coordinated community initiatives and advance outreach goals.
- Maintain organized records, files, and databases related to community relations activities and outreach efforts.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to support the Community Relations/Workforce Development teams and Port Houston’s mission.
Requirements
- Students must be currently enrolled in and have already completed two semesters in an undergraduate or graduate degree program
- 2027/2028 graduation status preferred (junior/senior level)
- May 2026 graduates are not eligible unless enrolling in graduate program in Fall 2026
- Students must either attend a Houston area college/university or have a permanent residence within a commutable distance
- Students must be in good academic standing to apply for an internship; a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.7 is preferred
- Students must be able to work throughout the established (11 to 12) week program dates
- Demonstrates strong organizational and analytical skills
- Demonstrates attention to detail
- Ability to multi-task
- Ability to prepare business cases and explain and/or support the recommended course of action
- Ability to self-manage work expectations
- Ability to work as an individual contributor and/or within a team
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, including ability to listen to business partners and understand their expectations and requirements
- Strong interpersonal and time management skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
- Willingness to learn
- Punctuality is key
- Ability to successfully pass fingerprinting background, as well as standard background check
